What is a Portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of your best pictures along with a Comp Card.
No two photos can be shot in the same location, or with the same outfit, make-up or hair style. Each has to be unique and spectacular.
At the front of the portfolio needs to be your Comp Card.
But before getting a photographer and attempting to put one together, the aspiring model has to consider the type of modeling he or she wants to do.
1. Editorial/Fashion Modeling
These are the hardest jobs to get because there are strict requirements:
For example, women have to be at least 173 cm. (5 feet 8 inches) tall, have a thin build with hips measuring no larger than 88.9 cm (35 inches) and be between the ages of 16 to 26. Most men models have to be at least 180 cm (5 feet 11 inches) with an athletic build. Some training is usually required however if you've got "the look," most large and medium modeling agencies provide the necessary training.
2. Commercial Model
Commercial models have a much broader range for size, height and age. Normally, the model fits a certain type. For instance, one may be often
cast as the grandmother, suburban mom, businessman or car mechanic. These models appear in print and television ads for common products.

What is a Comp Card?
"Comp" stands for "Composit" Card and is the most important tool for making a good first impression. Usually they have five photos with basic information about the model. Each photo has got to be unique and brilliant. Individually and collectively they've got to tell a story, to communicate who you are and what you can do. |
If you're attempting to put together your own portfolio you've got to do a lot of research first. Critically important are: a professional photographer, great locations, make-up, outfits, and of course, "the look." Equally important is getting a printer that will produce professional quality photos.
